Batu – Marius [Hessle Audio]
Hessle Audio returns with their first output of 2017 with Batu’s Marius EP. A match made in heaven and one that has been a long time in the making it’s certain any fans of the label will be overjoyed to see the Bristol based producer finally appear on Hessle. ‘Marius’ has been doing the rounds on the Hessle boys shows recently and with good reason. Seamlessly slipping into the Hessle sound and making it his own, Batu has produced four weighty and unique tracks here, each one as good as the previous. Excellent stuff from the producer and maintaining the prowess the label has garnered for pioneering sounds!
Jack Peoples – Laptop Cafe [Clone Aqualung Series]
Following on from the February repress of The Other People Place’s Lifestyles Of The Laptop Cafe comes another piece of James Stinson wizardry: Laptop Cafe, released under the alias Jack Peoples. Recorded around the year 2000, the six-track mini-album is a classic example of the smooth, aquatic electro for which Stinson became so revered during his lifetime. The untitled tracks were recently found on a ‘long lost DAT tape’ and will be released via Clone’s Aqualung Series imprint, which has previously put out records by Drexciya-related projects such as Der Zyklus and Zerkalo. Exquisitely timeless, Laptop Cafe serves as one more reminder of Stinson’s abundance of skill and mastery of the electro sound.
Marcel Dettmann – Selectors 003 [Dekmantel]
The latest edition in the Dekmantel Selectors series comes from veteran German DJ and producer Marcel Dettmann. Following on from the excellent compilations made by Young Marco and Motor City Drum Ensemble, the crate-digging series takes a turn into darker territory as Dettmann looks to his formative years for inspiration. EBM and industrial sounds dominate the Berghain residents choices, with tracks by the likes of Front 242 and Ministry exemplifying what Dettmann describes as his ‘pre-techno’ period. Powerful and jaunty, this album is a testament to the series’ stylistic diversity, and leaves us excited for the next instalment.
Various Artists – 10 Years 04 [Dekmantel]
Our second selection this week from Amsterdam’s premiere musical platform is the fourth edition of Dekmantel’s series celebrating it’s tenth birthday. Featuring music from label favorites Egyptian Lover, Syracuse & Epsilove, Palms Trax and Interstellar Funk; 10 Years 04 is a spacey, punchy record – littered with electro-oriented percussion and with a generous helping of acid to boot! Dance-floor essentials from start to finish.
Laksa – Como [Ilian Tape]
The latest release from Ilian Tape comes from London-based producer Laksa. Having previously put out records on Mistry and and Timedance Laksa’s fourth 12″ is possibly his most impressive to date. On a label with a strong and distinctive, if sometimes repetitive sound, Como is a refreshing addition to the Italian imprint’s back catalogue. Capturing the dreamy quality synonymous with the label’s sound, Laksa also brings his own bassy take on UK techno to the fore, creating a highly enjoyable four-track EP.
