Various Artists – Space, Energy & Light [Soul Jazz Records]

Our record of the week comes this time out from London’s own Soul Jazz Records. An eminent force in music over the last quarter of a century, the label’s Space, Energy & Light compilation focuses on early electronic music produced between the 1960s and 1980s. Here you’ll find key works from artists such as Mother Mallard, Laurie Spiegel and Tod Dockstader. A celebration of innovation and experimentation, contained within are fourteen tracks of breathtaking music: tracks who’s dates of origin will be certain to leave a few jaws on a few floors.

DJ Central & Erika Casier – Drive [Regelbau]

The ever consistent Regelbau imprint comes through with one of their strongest releases to date in the form of DJ Central & Erika Casier’s fantastic single Drive. Casier’s sugary, Kelela-esque vocals are laced through a variety of different forms across the record. The A-side features a sparse, breaks driven ‘First Mix’ from Central – a perfect snapshot of the Regelbau ‘sound’; as well as an accompanying ambient mix. Turn to the flipside and we find a remix by an artist truly at the top of his game right now – DJ Sports. In wake of his fantastic debut LP Modern Species, the label head turns ‘Drive’ into a club ready garage banger that rounds off the record in classy, euphoric fashion.

Aleksi Perala – Simulation X [Clone Basement Series]

Gracing the blog for the second week in a row, Clone this time bring us an album sampler from Finnish producer Alexi Perala – featuring three-tracks from his forthcoming Simulation LP. Released via their Basement Series, the record gives a perfect taste of Perala’s spacey brand of techno, with mechanical bleeps and bloops raining down over frantic, reverb-heavy percussion.

Nubia – The Time Is Right [Athens Of The North]

The latest release from Scottish reissue imprint Athens Of The North comes in the form of a two-track 7″ by Nubia. Both ‘The Time Is Right’ and ‘Feeling Funky’ comes from the mind of George Rivera, who provided the original master tracks to allow Athens Of The North to bring new life to these incredibly rare disco gems. Ascribed by label head Euan Fryer to the niche sub-genre of ‘Chicano Soul Floaters’, a dainty summer’s evening breeze seems to flow calmly through both tracks – a perfect record for this time of year.

Ossia – Gridlock [Berceuse Heroique]

Following on from the success of Control/Information/Version on Berceuse Heroique, Bristol based producer Ossia returns to the label with another weighty and dangerous release. Gridlock is the latest EP from the producer, featuring the original track ‘Tumult’ and a remix by fellow Bristolian Lurka. Heavy stuff as always, and another great addition to the Berceuse Heroique catalogue!
