Hunter Lombard – Eris [Jack Dept]
The latest release on Volvox and John Barera’s Brooklyn-based Jack Dept imprint comes from fellow New Yorker Hunter Lombard. Having made associations with the likes of Kim Ann Foxman of Hercules & Love Affair, Lombard has been steadily crafting her sound as a producer and as a DJ over the last few years. Eris, featuring two excellent remixes from Foxman, is a truly stunning debut EP. A combination of frenetic, electro-oriented breaks and acid soaked techno, tracks such as ‘The Evas’ and ‘Raeh’ burst with raw energy and emotion. Listen and love.
Jaures – Whities Duplate 05 [Whities]
2018 is shaping up to me another great year for Whities. Following an excellent 12″ from Tessela & Lanark Artefax and with a new Quirke EP on the near horizon, the sudden release of a fifth dubplate from Tasker’s London-based label presents yet another success story. Featuring a single track from Die Orakel regular Jaures, the release is certainly worth inclusion. ‘TRI’ is a growling, grooving number: powerful without breaking it’s steady stride – a propulsive bass line and desiccated vocal sample collaborating to form an incredibly eerie five and a half minutes of music.
Yu Su – Preparations For Departure [Arcane]
An artist surely set for big things in the next few years is Yu Su. With fantastic mixes for Truants and Hessle Audio on Rinse, as well as a string of excellent original releases, Preparations For Depature is an EP we have been eagerly anticipating for some time. Since ‘Make Your Escape’ and ‘I’ll Say When I Can’ dropped back in October we knew we were in for a great EP , and now can finally listen to it’s gentle, soothing sounds in full. Go support a great artist and great label!
Hi & Saberhägen – Light On Leaves [Intergraded]
One of the most popular figures in UK dance music at the moment, Midland’s recently birthed Intergraded label heaps further praise on his name. A platform for artists with stature smaller than his own, February saw the release of Introduction, featuring debut tracks from the likes of Jay and Peach. Continuing this fine vein of form, we are now treated to a record from Scottish duo Hi & Saberhägen. Slow, steady, ambient house music is the tonic this time out – Light On Leaves’ four tracks comprising an entirely enchanting experience.
Watching Airplanes – Psyop [Banlieue Records / Peur Bleue Records]
Our final release for this week is a collaborative release between two labels: Banlieue Records and Peur Bleue Records – who together bring us the debut LP from production duo Watching Airplanes. Half time, club, duke and more collide in this incredible concoction of originality and fun.
